Did You Know That The Lord Of The Rings Films Needed Lightsabers?

Friends, as this is the first of April it is that time of year when we not only have to take things with a lot of salt but it is the perfect time to share videos and memes that are sure to make you laugh. Such is the case with the video we are sharing with you today – I have to thank Michael Walsh of the Nerdist for the heads up – a look at how the Lord of the Rings films would have turned out had lightsabers from Star Wars been added to the first film. The short answer is it is surprisingly awesome actually, the work done by Immersion VFX I think really has to be commended here – because a lot of attention was paid to little details, such as the glow of the lightsaber on the wielder’s face, etc. In fact on the Immersion VFX YouTube channel, it is revealed that it took five months to take this almost seven minute clip from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and ‘replace’ most of the medieval weaponry used by said fellowship and populate it with weapons more suitable “… for a more civilized age.” In addition I should point out that the music has been altered to feature selections from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith as well as Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Better yet in my personal opinion is it proves the only way to make Gimli, that legendary member of Durin’s Folk even more dangerous is to give him a pair of lightsabers!

Now I desparately would love to share with you The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies clip that Immersion VFX has produced – except it gives away a pretty big scene – I do not want to spoil it in case you’ve not seen the film for yourself yet. The same is true for the adding of lightsabers to John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – incredibly impressive work but ventures too far into spoiler territory. However I am going to leave you with the first part of the fight scene from Thor: Ragnarok – because quite frankly watching the Hulk dual wield lightsabers is pretty awesome… and the God of Sparkles is pretty great too.
