What Is Going On With The New Toucan Sam?

2 min read

Friends, I am sure that over the last couple of days you have seen numerous articles from all over the internet talking about the redesign of Toucan Sam, the mascot for Froot Loops cereal for the past 57 years. Judging by said articles it appears that some folks are kind of upset about this recent change in the look of Toucan Sam – with some fans taking to Instagram to let Kellogg know they are not down with the changes. I’ve been able to find one of the new commercials on YouTube – so check it out for yourself and see what you think about Toucan Sam’s new style.

That video was uploaded on May 10th and has already garnered over 2,900 views and has 101 dislikes – while there are a few commenters who appear in favor of the change, most are obviously against this new version of Toucan Sam. Although to be fair I have to say that browsing through the comments – no one has crossed the line in their responses at the very least. I am honestly not angry about the change but I will admit I do not particularly think the design is all that good – furthermore this TV spot for some reason has made me feel old. To be honest this isn’t like it is the first time that the Froot Loops mascot has been redesigned – albeit not quite as startling a change as this recent version perhaps. Just look back at the version from 1963, that not only featured the voice work of Mel Blanc but in this iteration the mascot had a predilection for speaking in Pig Latin.

I am assuming that the two fellow Toucans shown in the early television commercials are supposed to be Sam’s Nephews – although as far as I know this hasn’t been confirmed – though judging by this ad… maybe Sam is just the mentor to them?
