The Necronomicon Won’t Make You A Better Person… But It Will Make You Laugh!

3 min read

Friends, the other day thanks to a good friend from the arcade, I was able to watch this video from Joseph Nanni – an ad that at first glance might seem like some others you’ve seen before in the past. You know, two friends meeting up for some breakfast or lunch – when one happens to remark they’ve been reading a book that has changed their life for the better. Although in this case, the book being offered from one friend to the other happens to be the Necronomicon – the dark grimoire written by Abdul Alhazred and talked a bit about in various stories of H.P. Lovecraft. While the fictional tome from the works of Lovecraft might not be real – you will really bust out laughing after watching this ad for the fabled book.

My introduction to both H.P. Lovecraft and later the Necronomicon – was thanks to Re-Animator from 1985 as well as playing The Call of Cthulhu role-playing game by Chaosium Inc. in Junior High School. Throw in catching 1988’s The Unnamable on VHS and a pretty nice selection of Lovecraft reprint collections at the local Hasting’s and it is easy to see why I was all too eager to climb aboard the Cthulhu Mythos train.

Now it would be fair to say that one of the things that the stories of H.P. Lovecraft were lacking was a lot of humor – I suppose mind-breaking Cosmic Horror doesn’t lend itself well to levity. Thankfully no one has told Joseph Nanni that because there are a few fake commercials involving the Cthulhu Mythos – such as this ad for Elder Sign… with the way things are going in the World you might want to stock up on a lot of it!

And if you don’t mind the shameless plug – now might be the perfect time for you to listen to the Saturday Frights podcast episode where the Projectionist and myself tackle 1985’s Re-Animator. A lot has changed on the show over six years to say the least – looking forward to bringing all of you Fright Fans the third season of the podcast in a couple of months.

“Such a shameless plug… I am appalled.
