Diary Of An Arcade Employee Podcast Ep. 028 – Space Invaders

Friends, can you believe that we have two Diary podcasts in one month, have I possibly gone insane? Some of you listeners might think that is indeed the case, but today just so happens to see the release of Ready Player One. Judging by the trailers that have been released, it appears that the classic 1978 Space Invaders makes an appearance in the film. Which is of course why I decided to release this episode of the Diary podcast today – in the hopes that it you might perhaps listen to it while standing in line for this latest Steven Spielberg film. And what better way to wile away that wait than listening to the history of Space Invaders?

In this episode as always I give you a rundown on the origins of Space Invaders – in addition to what I hope is a a fascinating look at it’s creator, Tomohiro Nishikado. To be upfront, this episode is a bit longer than the usual Diary podcast – the reason being of course that such a monumental and groundbreaking arcade title as Space Invaders has a lot of aspects to discuss. Naturally I share my first encounter with the legendary game in my youth – furthermore I talk about the “shocking night” we received the game at the arcade.

In all honesty, my friends. I probably could have gone an entire hour with this episode when all is said and done – the game simply helped to change the landscape for video games as much as the likes of Pong, Pac-Man, or Street Fighter II. So without further ado, I hope you will join us for this episode of the Diary podcast as we tackle the 1978 phenomenon that was Space Invaders!
